Never before in Southern California and perhaps in the United States was there street dancing performed by various tribes of Mindanao. Fourteen organizations affiliated with the Federation of Mindanao Associations brought to life the ethnic tribes in the Cerritos Regional Park with the help of Samahang Kambayoka Cultural and Arts Foundation who choreographed and dressed up the tribe with their colorful costumes brought from Mindanao along with their trinkets and musical instruments.
The tribes that were featured were the Talaandig of Misamis Oriental, the Higaonon of Bukidnon, the Mamanwa of Agusan, the Maranao of Lanao, the Subanon of Misamis Occidental and Zamboanga del Norte, Yakan of Zamboanga del Sur and the Matigsalog of Camiguin.
Besides street dancing, the tribe performed dancing, songs and chants before a crowd of 1,000.
The event was announced in local newspapers and invitations were sent out. Although organized by Mindanao people, the event was meant for all Filipino-Americans. One of the guests, Ben Baldoza, wrote:
"My friends Chris and Sylvia and their daughter Diana, Lee and I are thanking you once again for the invitation. Your event was so educational and inspirational (especially to me who knows very little about Mindanao culture). I have never seen authentic and very colorful costumes from the South. I also have great admiration for your pride of your culture and the hard work each had contributed for the success of this event. Diana, being born here, was so thrilled with the beadworks and shells. During lunch, everybody at the table was so nice they even shared food with us. They chat with us and most of the time they talk to us in your dialect they thought we were kidding when we told them Sylvia is from Pangasinan, Lee is an Igorot and I am a Mangyan from Mindoro. Too bad, Chris had to go home early, he forgot his pills, and Diana had to do her internship job in L.A. The remaining three of us all had so much fun we forgot about the time, we had to rush back home to change clothes as we had a wedding to go to that same afternoon in Arcadia. We apologize for not saying goodbye.
"More power to the Mindanao people!!!!! You all have a great culture!!!!! And Best of Luck on your project of medical care, it is such a noble idea."
